Artist's Statement:

Art is a way of life for me, a necessity. The creative process informs my living and my artistic expressions. Meditation is at the core of my art. What I mean by meditation is a practice of presence, moment to moment, of showing up with awareness to what is: to the body, emotions, to what I see in my environment and the world, and most of all to the creative process of painting. The more I get out of the way, the more the image comes through in a pure way.

I like to play with colors, shapes, and textures. Seeing is a deeply sensate and sensuous experience for me. I also love to paint what I see. That includes what I see in the outer world and what I see inside: people, landscapes, dreams, inner feeling states, and narrative scenes from real life. I like to play with a wide range of styles and media. However, my primary medium and love is painting in oil.

When I paint what I see, I tune in deeply. I let go of all that I know about what I see, and all that I'm supposed to know about making a figurative, literal image. I dive deeply into the mystery of seeing and allow myself to trust what I see and paint it directly as I see it. There is a dialogue happening between what I see and my hand (with the brush) and what moves it inside of me. I am affected by what I see and am transformed by it. So, my painting includes this transformation and the response that emerges out of me. What I see becomes transparent and a mystery touches me.
